2月14日 sneaky blizzard makes for interesting snowshoeI set out on a lovely afternoon for a snowshoe with the lovely miss Charlie. It's a bomby -4 and overcast but once deep into the trail the sky darkens and in the distance I see a storm brewing...the field I could once see clearly is a blur and before we know it we are caught in a wicked and very cold blizzard. We pick up the pace and get home in a snappy 15 minutes but not before minor frost bite has nipped my face and hands. I could have avoided the hand chill but then how would I have grabbed these photos...
1月4日 cozy necks this winterit's something I have been wanting to "re"learn for a couple of years now - knitting! So I decided to buy a couple 'skeins' of wool (I love the lingo), some needles, and a great how-to book and off I went...to the couch, for hours! I have to say that after only a few days of stitching with yarn I am thoroughly enjoying this relaxing passtime. so what have I learned so far...double cast on, throw away, knit, purl, make stripes!!!, and most important...how to "un-knit", how to knit while on the phone, standing up, watching a flick, eating pizza, drinking coffee (bad idea...my white wool took a swim in my mug)...
Well, it's -8 out there and I have a scarf to finish.
12月28日 happy ho ho ho6月19日 landscaping marathon2月5日 Beer Bread...YUMM!I grabbed this DITTY from a favorite recipe website, allrecipes.com. I improvised a bit...tin cans and Rickard's Red...and it turned out fabulous! Who says you can't do anything useful with a Red!? Try this and play with different beers. I plan to try this out with a stout next.
the stuff you need...
then... Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly grease a 9x5 inch loaf pan...OR two stewed tomato tins:) In a large mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour, whole wheat flour, baking powder, salt and brown sugar. Pour in beer, stir until a stiff batter is formed. It may be necessary to mix dough with your hands. Scrape dough into prepared loaf pan. Bake in preheated oven for 50 to 60 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into center of the loaf comes out clean... cool and enjoy! I tried a slice warmed with butter and molasses. OMG! 12月10日 under 2 feet of powder11月12日 Enchanted pathWith every day of cutting, clearing, and burning of old brush and dead wood, the back terraces are evolving into an enchanting place to be complete with walking trail amidst old rock walls, straight as arrow sugar maple, and plenty of potential for shade loving plants. The dream of this being a destination rather than an overgrown, impossible to traverse forest, is coming to life more every day.
11月5日 A nice spot for a vineyard? As it turns out the property immediately behind the house was once used for farming, terraced farming. Upon further investigation there remain a number of terraces, rock walls and all, several hundred feet back into this area. So, lets see what these terraces look like without all the brush. In over my head? Perhaps. But if I start a terrace at a time this just might make a lovely mini-vinyard some day. Now this will be a fun project!
11月4日 on to winter10月6日 another updateI tested out these new colors in a confined space before taking on the job of painting the entire house. The veranda is quite like another room in the house to me, spending nearly the same amount of time on it as in the kitchen, so it really deserved a facelift. 7月6日 RomaWhat can I say about this city? My first impressions may not provide the city with a fair chance considering the bustling airport and long waits, 3 plus hours of wandering through the tiny but very busy, dirty streets with heavy backpack and too warm clothes, in search of hotel with an exhausted traveling companion, local transit adventures that brought us to all ends of the city - the wrong ends, and miscommunications with the locals that led us who knows where. Once hotel was located, showers immediately following this miraculous discovery, and plans for dinner sorted, the city began to take on new charm. As far as sites go, only a couple were squeezed in...the Spanish Steps were lovely with bustling tourists and youth toting various local beverages, guitar wielding dude singing American pop'ish tunes - way out of place, dinner near-by was delish but lasted a bit too long for certain members of our foursome, and the colosseum was impressive. What can one say about this amazing structure? Now, off to Civitevecchia, the Port of Roma.
Check out the Roma album. 5月13日 ode to summerAnother month has past! the weather has turned and it finally feels like summer is here to stay - leaves are popping, the grass is out of control, and the temperature is staying above 4...one can't ask for too much, my first race for the year is behind me, bikinis have been taken out of storage, corn has been boiled...well BBQd, we've hit the river for a paddle, all manner of bug abound, the smell of summer is in the house, the cows are calling from across the river, the frogs are at it in the creek, I've rescued Charlie from a baby porcupine...albeit a little late, socks are packed away, and I have oodles of freckles! I love this time of year. 4月15日 More SNOW, more renovationsAnother productive weekend at the house. I'd rather be saying that nothing got done because it was so warm and sunny all I could bring myself to do was relax on the veranda with a book and bottle of wine. But alas, not in the cards. Following a delicious dinner with friends on Friday night I spent Saturday installing baseboards, building a doorframe in the stairway, and continuing work in the bathroom. I wrapped up with painting all of the above. Today I was able to get my 16km long run in while it was still sunny and have a wee sunburn and lots of new freckles, along with very tired legs, to prove it. I replaced the boards on the veranda this afternoon and am happy to say I am now ready for summer. COME ON HEAT!
Charlie and I are beat! 4月8日 Spring is in the air......and so is all this white stuff! I can't say that I was filled with joy upon discovering the ground had been yet again covered in snow. Alas, the weather is one of those things we have little control over so getting angry over a snowstorm on Easter weekend is just silly. However, choosing when we do our long run is completely within our control and I left mine until today. Yippee. 3月25日 bathroom renovation updateI am happy to report all of the plumbing in the bathroom is now complete. This morning marked the end of all things water-related with the final job - sink/vanity plumbing. I was successful on the first attempt. No leaks, floods, or otherwise nasty water situations to report. Next will be the finishing of the in-wall cabinets then replacement of the wall light fixture. I'm 80% there! |
